Fold Formed Pendant $100

Foldform pendant

In this class, craft a pendant employing several basic metal smithing skills (always great practice for advanced artists): sawing metal sheet, filing, forming, texturing, cold-connecting, adding patina, and other special skills such as fold-forming, doming, and stamping with various tools. Select a copper drop for a theme, and stamping tools that expand your idea, and let’s get to it! Other skills that are options for intermediate/advanced levels are adding stones and riveting.

Note: This is an intermediate class … but, beginning level students can be accommodated with some adjustments to the features shown for this project!

See the supply list below for tools you need to bring because most tools are not supplied by the instructor or shop.

Materials: Items that are for purchase at the shop are noted with * asterisk. Please arrive early to shop for what you need before class begins. All of the tools listed are required unless otherwise noted.

Kit Fee: The kit for the class will be added to your ticket on the day of class.

Materials to purchase day of class:
Kit includes:
24 gauge copper sheet (3″x3″)*
24 gauge sterling sheet (2″x3″)*
1 drop charm (and a bead if you like)*
Jump rings to fit (once pendant is nearly done)*

Bring these tools to class (or purchase):
Butane jumbo torch* and fuel (get fuel at Spec’s or Total Wine or hardware store)
Long tweezers for handling hot metal*
Annealing pan with pumice*
Water dish (provided)
Bench pin*
Circle template with a 1.25″ circle
Metal cutting shears*
Small (preferable) nylon or leather mallet*
Sharp scribe for marking metal*
Jewelry hand saw*
Saw blades size 2/0 to 3/0*
Flat full-size file*
Set of needle files* OR 1-2 small files OR a half-round ring file
Steel block, 3″x3″ minimum size*
Sand bag to cushion steel block (or a thick towel or rubber block)*
Rivet hammer* OR cross-peen/goldsmith hammer – must have one face that is narrow and straight across (about 3mm wide) used for flattening a fold in metal
Stamping/embossing hammer*
Chasing hammer with ball peen*
Stamping tools: swirls, stars, dots, lines*
1 plexiglass acrylic piece, 1.75″x1.5″ for dapping texture*
1.3mm round dapping punch for making raised dots*
Manual center punch*
Hand vise with various small drill bits (optional)*
Bench knife (to pry open folded metal)*
Dapping block, steel (if you have)*
Largest steel dapping tool (if you have)*
Wire cutters*
Chain nose/flat nose pliers, one or both*
Small brush for liver of sulfur application, if not just dipping the piece*
Small container for liver of sulfur solution (ceramic or metal) (provided)
Coffee warmer to heat the liver of sulfur
Pro Polish pads for removing liver of sulfur (optional)*
Assorted bristle discs for removing liver of sulfur (optional)*
Magnifiers/readers are highly recommended for a successful class experience (even if you wear contacts or glasses)! (Limited readers available for purchase)

Prerequisite: Experience using a jeweler’s saw. Experience annealing metal preferred but not required.

1. Classes will begin on time! All students must arrive early for class. Even if you have already purchased supplies for the class, it takes time for everyone to set up and settle in. Students arriving late may need to re-schedule. Please be respectful of others by arriving early for class. If students do not contact the bead shop 24 hours prior to start of class, or do not show for the class, the class fee will not be refunded.
